Gold Nanoparticles Make Liposuction Safer

Gold Nanoparticles Make Liposuction Safer
Jun-24-14
Researchers have discovered a way gold nanoparticles can be used to melt fat to simplify liposuction procedures, giving the already-valuable metal yet another use.

Although a common procedure, suction-assisted liposuction has some definite drawbacks—one of which is that the procedure will sometimes remove nerves and connective tissue along with the fat.

Inspired by the way gold nanoparticles, already commonly used in medicine, will become extremely hot when subjected to an infrared laser light, Adah Almutairi—a nanomedicine expert— and her cosmetic surgeon brother decided to try injecting the particles into the fat designated to be removed during the liposuction procedure. Heating the gold nanoparticles with the infrared light caused the fat to melt while leaving the nerves and other tissue, which have a higher melting point, untouched. This allowed the fat to liquefy for easier removal without damaging the surrounding structures.
