Researchers have created a filter-free process that used fluorescent light to clean the air, eliminating the production of hazardous emissions.
Developed by Professor Matthew Johnson, from the University of Copenhagen, the Gas Phase Advanced Oxidation (GPAO) requires no filters and demands less maintenance that current systems. The system works by combining the polluted gas with ozone in the presence of fluorescent lamps, causing free radicals to form. These free radicals in turn cause the pollutants to clump up like dust, which can then be captured with electrostatic particles.
In tests, the GPAO system can remove both toxic fumes and smells, as well as spores, pollen and viruses.
