Hand-Held Microscope Lets Surgeons See Cancer Cells

Hand-Held Microscope Lets Surgeons See Cancer Cells
Jan-26-16
A new pen-sized microscope that allows doctors to see cancer cells at the cellular level could offer a quicker and more accurate diagnosis.

In development by a team from the University of Washington, the handheld device would allow surgeons to see the tissue at a cellular level, without the need for a biopsy and subsequent lab testing. Besides offering a new diagnostic tool during surgery (allowing surgeons to know “when to stop cutting”), the hand-held device could also be used to allow dentists or clinicians to quickly check an abscess or mole for signs of cancer.
