The HaptoMime gives users the sensation of touching a touchscreen without them making any actual physical contact at all.
Developed by a team from the University of Tokyo, the HaptoMime is made up an LCD screen set beneath an aerial imaging plate (AIP). The LCD screen is reflected through the plate in a way that looks as if it is hovering in front of the user like a normal touchscreen. To make operating the touchscreen illusion easier, an array of sensors on the device will recognize when a person tries to touch the screen and will transmit ultrasonic vibrations to the fingertip, giving the sensation of contact.
The no-touch touchscreen could have a number of applications, including allowing doctors to access touchscreens during surgery (when sanitation is vital) and eliminating the risk of spreading diseases through shared touchscreens such as those on ATMs.
