Researchers have developed a hybrid robot with a rigid body and soft legs able to traverse challenging terrain.
The 3D-printed robot, from a team at UC San Diego, combines the advantages of hard and soft robotics, with the hard body offering support for the soft legs. The robot’s four soft, actuated legs are equipped with a network of hollow chambers that are inflated in a precise order, enabling the bot to move at speeds up to .8 inches per second, even over terrain like gravel or sand.
