A new technology that creates biocrude oil from raw sewage could generate up to 30 million barrels of oil annually.
The technology, developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, involves subjecting the waste to a pressure of 3000 pounds per square inch and then heating it at 660°F. This hydrothermal liquefaction process mimics the Earth’s natural process, but instead of millennia, takes about 45 minutes. The system could be installed in wastewater plants, where the team believes it could harvest between two and three gallons of biocrude from each person, every year.
