HemaApp Tests Blood with no Needles

HemaApp Tests Blood with no Needles
Sep-12-16
The HemaApp works with a smartphone to quickly and accurately scan blood for anemia--with no need to take an actual sample.

Developed by a team from the University of Washington, the HemaApp uses the built-in camera and light of a standard smartphone to identify the color of the user’s blood. Once the user places their finger on the phone’s LED light, the app will trigger the light to shine through their finger as the camera identifies the level of hemoglobin in the blood based on its color.

In tests, the HemaApp showed an 82 percent accuracy, which is the same accuracy as purpose-built devices currently on the market.
