Implant Could Help Prevent Blindness

Implant Could Help Prevent Blindness
Jul-04-18
Researchers have created a tiny, pressure-sensing eye implant that could help prevent blindness.

Developed by a team at Caltech, the highly sensitive pressure sensor is significant in that it can remain safely implanted in the eye for years. The key to the long-lasting implant is a special silicon-oil coating surrounded by parylene, which protects the implant from corrosion while ensuring proper pressure readings. Once in place, the tiny device will continuously measure ocular pressure, transmitting the readings wirelessly to a handheld scanner and allowing glaucoma patients to track eye pressure and seek early treatment options, if necessary.
