Implant Prevents HIV Infection

Implant Prevents HIV Infection
Jan-12-17
A skin implant from Intarcia Therapeutics promises to prevent HIV infection by releasing a steady stream of medication.

The implant, developed with help from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, relies on a technique called pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent the virus from taking hold in the first place. Once implanted in the patient, the tiny device will deliver a steady supply of anti-HIV drugs, and will need replacing only once or twice a year.

The device will greatly benefit people who live in constant proximity with the disease, such as couples in which only one partner is infected with the virus.

It would also be useful for medical professionals. I wonder whether a similar device could be used to prevent the common cold, which most often does not feel very "common".
