A new implantable device able to stimulate natural tear production with electricity could bring relief to the millions of people who suffer from chronically dry eyes.
Created by a team at Stanford University, the device delivers micro-electrical pulses to the lacrimal gland to stimulate tear production. The team has created two models of the device: one that is implanted in the nasal cavity and one embedded in the skin beneath the eyebrow. The tear delivery rates can be controlled with a wireless controller.
The research team has founded a company called Oculeve to refine and market the device.
