Implant Traps Tumor Cells for Early Diagnosis

Implant Traps Tumor Cells for Early Diagnosis
Sep-11-15
A small implant able to “trap” tumor cells could be used to detect cancer before it can spread too far.

Developed by a team from the U.S., the biodegradable discs measure about 0.2 inches in diameter and are “baited” with immune cells. These immune cells attract the CTCs to the disc, where there are detected by a sensor, allowing for an earlier diagnosis and treatment before the cancer spreads further throughout the body. And because the cells have already been trapped, they are easier to identify in order to determine the best treatment.
