Infrared Detects Cavities Before They Form

Infrared Detects Cavities Before They Form
Oct-08-16
A new infrared camera system could let dentists detect caries sooner, before they turn into cavities.

The system relies on a simple laser array and low-cost infrared cameras. The laser light was specifically chosen to project a color and wavelength that is absorbed by early caries—creating a signal that can be picked up by the infrared camera even before a cavity has formed. In tests on extracted molars subjected to an acid solution, the system was able to detect lesions that could lead to cavities in only two days, instead of the standard ten required for a visual inspection.

The team believes the system could have applications both in the clinic and at home.
