Injectable Mesh Sensor Studies Brain Function

Injectable Mesh Sensor Studies Brain Function
Jun-08-15
A mesh-like electronic sensor that can be safely injected into the brain may one day allow surgeons to perform more precise brain surgeries without damaging the surrounding tissue.

The flexible electronic mesh is made of polymer that has been embedded with electronics. The mesh can be injected into the brain non-invasively, via a needle, where it then unfolds without harming the surrounding brain tissue. In tests on mice, the mesh was able to monitor the brain function of the lab animals.

The development team hopes the injectable device could one day be used to deliver stem cells to repair area of the brain or to continuously monitor tissue, such as the brain or the heart.
