The prototype Spark device from JikoPower can harness the power of cooking fires to charge electric devices.
Designed by a team from the University of Washington, the Spark is equipped with a metal prong that is placed in the fire between the cooking pot and the flames. The heat from the flames will warm one side of the device’s thermoelectric module, while a container of water on the top keeps that side comparatively cool. The temperature difference is then harnessed as a current up to 5 watts, enough to charge a phone within two hours.
