LABONFOIL Portable Diagnostic Device

LABONFOIL Portable Diagnostic Device
Mar-11-14
The automated LABONFOIL was designed with the goal of creating inexpensive and portable laboratories able to interact with smart devices to diagnose a wide array of diseases.

Part of a European project consisting of 13 partners in 8 countries, the LABONFOIL is based lab-on-a-chip technology and uses smart cards and skin patches paired with a portable reader. The cards and patches were created using foil, instead of silicon, to keep costs low, and tests have proven the devices to be strong and reliable. The foil-based cards can detect different chemicals and biomarkers, and the card reader can then send the data to smartphones or computers via a wireless connection.

The LABONFOIL currently uses three smart cards and a skin patch tuned to react to specific substances. The skin patch has been proven able to detect cocaine consumption, while the cards have identified colon cancer, bacteria in food and phytoplankton levels in sea water.
