Landmine-Detecting Robot

Landmine-Detecting Robot
Jan-27-14
By adding an array of sensors and other new equipment to a Husky UGV, engineers have created a robotic landmine detector that could help to save human lives.

The Husky robot was donated to the University of Coimbra in Portugal by Clearpath Robotics, the same company that designed and developed it. The university team then modified the open-source, all-terrain robot, equipping it with sensors, stereo vision, GPS, a laser and an arm that holds a metal detector and radar system able to locate buried objects (such as mines). In theory, the robot would be able to locate the mine before driving over it and blowing itself up, which is still better than the same thing happening to a human.

The robot has already been made a part of the TIRAMISU project, a demining project in Europe.
