Largest Kite Propelled Ship Yet

Cargill shipping has announced that it will equip its 30,000 ton handysize vessel with a SkySail, making it the largest ever kite propelled ship.

The 320 square meter kites are produced by the Hamburg based SkySails company. The kites fly up to 400 meters above the ship, attached by a rope and controlled with an automated system that adjusts the kite's flight path. A SkySail kite assisted ship can use up to 35 percent less fuel.

Cargill and SkySails hope to have the handysize ship's system full operational by early 2012.
