Laser Light Monitors the Elderly for Falls

Laser Light Monitors the Elderly for Falls
Nov-12-14
Developed to help families keep a closer eye on elderly members, the "Laser Light" light bulbs can monitor a person's movements and trigger an alert if anything out of the usual happens.

The LED bulbs, from the Japanese cutting tool manufacturer Union Tool Co., can be fitted into a standard overhead light fixture. The bulbs are equipped with a miliwave radar device that constantly measures the distance between a person's head (it can monitor an entire room of people) and the floor. The sensing apparatus delivers a high level of accuracy, allowing it to recognize falls, breathing rates and even sleep patterns. Since the lamps are unobtrusive, the team hopes they will appeal to people who resent the feeling of being watched or wearing a monitoring device.

Technically, the Laser Light relies on radio waves, not lasers.
