LED Lights Lead Shoppers to the Goods

LED Lights Lead Shoppers to the Goods

Philips has introduced a system that uses the LED lights of stores along with consumers’ smartphones to direct shoppers to the items they are looking for.

The system can be integrated into existing LED store lights and takes advantage of the lights’ unique flicker rates, a technology known as Visual Light Communication (VLC). The human eye cannot detect the flicker, but the camera of the app-enabled smartphone can, which allows it to know the shopper’s location in the store. By accessing a map of the store, the app is able to guide the shoppers to the item they are looking for.

The system could also be expanded to offer the shoppers coupons, introduce them to new brands or provide alternative recipes as they near different products.
