A lightweight exosuit that boosts walking and running performance could give people with mobility restrictions a new level of independence.
The lightweight and portable robotic suit was developed by a team from Chung-Ang University to be worn during everyday activities. Made up of a fabric vest, belt and thigh wraps, the suit weighs just over 11 pounds and is powered by wearable batteries—making it no bulkier than a normal piece of clothing. The exosuit can also be switched between walking and running, a significant achievement made possible by a specialized gait-analysis algorithm that will adjust the suit’s assistance as needed.
According to Professor Giuk Lee, “In the long term, we envision this exosuit as hanging in a closet all the time, just like the clothes we wear every day.”
