Self-propelled liposomes able to migrate toward specific signals could offer a new way of delivering drugs to targeted areas of the body.
The liposomes created by the team from Penn State differ from the tissue-specific versions, which will bind to target tissue but have no straightforward way of making their way there. To improve this delivery system, the researchers created a type of liposome covered in enzymes that will produce energy to propel the liposomes via cheomotaxis. Altering the enzymes allows the liposomes to be drawn toward or away from a chemical signal, offering a level of control that could help guide a microfluidic device for drug delivery.
