Low-Cost Test for Lung Cancer

Low-Cost Test for Lung Cancer
Oct-04-16
An inexpensive new screening test for lung cancer invented by a student could allow many more people to detect the disease earlier.

Created by eighteen-year-old Zheng Xin Yong for his Google Science Fair project, the breathalyzer-style testing system relies on a combination of tetracosane and carbon powder that will change resistance when it comes in contact with alkane. Alkane (also known as paraffin) occurs naturally during oxidation, and is found at much higher levels in the breath of patients with lung cancer.

According to Yong, the entire system costs only about $15, compared to the thousands of dollars for comparable devices.
