Low-Profile Ankle Exoskeleton Offers Subtle Support

Low-Profile Ankle Exoskeleton Offers Subtle Support
Mar-24-19
A new, low-profile ankle exoskeleton can be worn under the clothing to add discreet support without the weight.

Developed by a team at Vanderbilt and the first of its kind to fit comfortably under clothing, the exoskeleton was made possible with the team’s creation of an unpowered friction clutch mechanism as thin as a shoe insole and worn inside the shoe. The device costs less than $100 to manufacture and weighs in at just under a pound, and its gentle but firm, battery-free support could have applications ranging from the elderly to soldiers.
