Magnetic Implants Bring Relief to Dancing Eyes

Magnetic Implants Bring Relief to Dancing Eyes
Jul-05-17
Magnetic implants in the eye sockets could provide a more effective treatment for people with dancing eyes syndrome.

Dancing eyes syndrome (nystagmus) causes the eyes to constantly flicker, which is disorienting and unpleasant for the patient. To offer an alternative to medication, the team from University College London and Oxford University implanted titanium-encased magnets in the eye socket. One magnet is attached to the bottom of the socket, while the other is connected a muscle that controls eye movement. The magnets help keep the eye steady without restricting necessary movement, what the team refers to as “action at a distance.”
