The team at Chicago’s Center for Bionic Medicine has developed the first manual wheelchair that can be operated while standing or sitting.
The wheelchair features a unique drive mechanism that allows the device to be operated manually in both the sitting and standing position, as well as the positions in between. The user is safely secured in the chair with a knee restraint block and lap belt. Besides allowing the user to stand eye-level with other people, the chair could also help encourage more exercise and increased independence.
