The handheld MasSpec pen can screen for cancer in seconds, ensuring all of the tumor is removed during surgery.
Developed by a team at the University of Texas-Austin, the MasSpec pen works by releasing a small drop of water from its tip, which makes contact with the suspect tissue. The water is then absorbed back into the pen, along with residual tissue that is analyzed on location by a mass spectrometer. According to the team, the MasSpec system is able to detect a variety of cancers, including lung, ovary and breast, with a 93 percent accuracy in just ten seconds.
In addition, the MasSpec Pen could be used during cancer surgeries to ensure all of the tumor is removed without harming nearby healthy tissue.
