MasSpec Pen Identifies Cancerous Tissue in Seconds

MasSpec Pen Identifies Cancerous Tissue in Seconds
May-15-18
The handheld MasSpec pen can accurately identify cancerous tissue in seconds, without the need to wait for lab results.

Developed by a team at the University of Texas at Austin, the MasSpec Pen is able to identify cancerous tissue during surgery, offering a 96 percent accurate diagnosis in just ten seconds. A water droplet located on the tip of the pen absorbs tissue molecules, and then is subjected to a mass spectrometer that identifies whether the molecules are indicative of a tumor.
