Metalens Focuses Full Color Spectrum

Metalens Focuses Full Color Spectrum
Jan-03-18
An achromatic metalens able to focus the full visible spectrum of light on a single spot could have applications in cameras and VR devices.

Flat metalenses are less bulky than traditional curved lenses, but are also limited in their ability to focus the full spectrum of light. To overcome that limitation, the team from SEAS created a metalens equipped with pairs of titanium dioxide nanofins able to compensate for the different wavelength speeds of colored light. The result is a single, flat lens that can be tuned to focus the wavelengths in the same spot, including white light.

As individualized holograms or plenty of small grains covered with transparent material, this might be an optical serial number and identification tag.
