Micromirrors Guide Cutting Laser Beams

Micromirrors Guide Cutting Laser Beams
Jun-07-15
Silicon mirrors able to withstand the heat from laser beams will make it possible to perform more intricate metal-working tasks.

The micromirrors are etched from silicon, and are used to guide high-power welding and cutting laser beams over the workpiece. Using laser beams to cut and weld offers much greater flexibility that conventional methods, but previous mirrors were not able to withstand the intense heat of the lasers. The new mirrors, however, have been coated with a protective layer and attached to a specially designed mount, which enables them to safely guide lasers powerful enough to process sheet steel or aluminum.
