Minibuilders Robots 3D Print Buildings On Site

Minibuilders Robots 3D Print Buildings On Site
Jun-22-14
The 'Minibuilders' mobile 3D printers are able to work together to print on-site, bringing us a step closer to very large, 3D printed structures that can be 'printed' on location.

As logic dictates, it would take a very large 3D printer to create a very large object. And although simple housing has been created using 3D printers, the structures have previously been printed off site and then assembled on location.

Designed by a group from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), the mobile 3D printing robots work together as a team of three to perform the different functions of the building process—allowing the building to be built in one continuous flow, layer by layer. The team of Minibuilders is made up of the Foundation robot, which lays down the foundation; the Grip robot, equipped with rollers that allow it to travel along the foundation to create walls, ceiling and lintels; and the Vacuum robot, which moves along the surface of the building to print a perpendicular layer that helps strengthen the structure.
