MOM Inflatable Incubator Wins Dyson Award

MOM Inflatable Incubator Wins Dyson Award
Nov-08-14
This year's first prize winner of the James Dyson award is the MOM, an inflatable incubator for premature infants designed for with an eye toward use in refugee camps.

Developed by James Roberts, a 23 year-old design grad from Loughborough University, the MOM was designed to be both affordable and portable. It can be inflated manually—which saves on shipping and storage space—with the inflatable walls acting as insulation to the keep the interior temperature stable. The unit is heated with ceramic heaters and is equipped with a phototherapy light for babies born with jaundice. Temperature and humidity are displayed on a screen, and the unit can operate for up to 24 hours on its internal battery in the event of a power failure. It can also be powered by alternative sources, including a car battery.
