Monster Molecule

Organic chemists in Switzerland have built a virus-sized macromolecule with 170,000 bond-forming chemical reactions.

The molecule, called PG5, is the largest synthetic molecule with a stable form. At 10 nanometeres in diameter and weighing as much as 200 million hydrogen atoms, it is much larger than the previous record holder that weighed in at 40 million hydrogen atoms. PG5 could hold drugs in its many branches, and it is a step toward molecular objects that keep their forms regardless of their environment.
