A graphene structure inspired by moth’s eyes could open the door to “smart wallpaper” able to harness waste heat to generate energy.

The material was created by a team from the University of Surrey, who used nano texturing to modify graphene sheets and create an incredibly efficient light-absorbent material inspired by the bumps on moths’ eyes. These bumps prevent light from reflecting, resulting in a material able to absorb 95 percent of light. According to the team, the nanostructured graphene sheets could be used to coat solar cells to help the absorb light more efficiently, or even lead to wallpaper able to capture enough water heat to generate electricity and power smart home needs.
