A novel plastic material inspired by a mushroom could keep surfaces—such as solar cells and lighting—clean and free of liquids.
A team from the University of Pittsburg created the plastic material, named nano-enoki PET, by basing it on the structure of the Enoki mushroom. A forest of tall, thin nanostructures with larger tops—similar to the mushroom—were deposited closely together on a sheet of PET, resulting in a transparent, superomniphobic material that can repel liquids even after being bent multiple times.
