A new nano-ear is able to hear incredibly faint sounds, which could be used to build an acoustic image of very tiny objects.
The ear works through a laser beam, which focuses heat on a 60-nanometer wide gold particle and then immersed it in water with other, similar particles. When the other particles were also heated, the team was able to measure how the first particle moved in response, and hear vibrations with significantly more sensitivity than ever before.
While still in the experimental phase, the nano-ear could open up new ways of studying micro-organisms and new avenues of research.
