Nanowafers Could Replace Eye Drops

Nanowafers Could Replace Eye Drops
Feb-07-15
Researchers have created a nanowafer drug delivery system for eye medications that could be applied to the eye like a contact lens.

The wafers, created by a team from Baylor College of Medicine, are about one-tenth the size of a standard contact lens. Tiny pockets embedded in the wafer hold medicine that is slowly released before the film itself dissolves completely, and one wafer contains enough medication for a daily dose.

In tests on mice, the nanowafers were shown to be twice as effective at healing wounds in the eye than conventional eye drops.
