A group of researchers from Toyota and Tohuku University announced progress on their work on a battery that uses a new compound that could store ten times as much power as a conventional battery.
They were able to make graphite-less single crystals of lithium cobalt oxide, a chemical compound used in the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
Existing lithium-ion batteries contain graphite that requires space that could be theoretically used to store more lithium ions, but removing the graphite
would result in a powerful battery for electric cars which can store 10 times more electrical charge.
