New Cement Safely Stores Nuclear Waste

New Cement Safely Stores Nuclear Waste
Feb-15-16
A new type of cement able to safely store nuclear waste for hundreds of thousands of years could offer a solution for safely disposing of the toxic byproduct.

Developed by a team from the UK, the cement would be used to build a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) underground. According to the team, from the University of Sheffield, the cement contains “mineral phases” that have been proven to absorb highly radioactive elements and prevent them from seeping into the environment, and is said to be 50 percent more effective at “reducing the impact of radiation than current storage solutions.”
