A new generation of washable, stretchable electronic textiles is strong enough to withstand a bullet, bringing us a bit closer to functional wearable electronics.
The fabric circuit board (FCB), created by a team from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is made up of pre-stretched elastic yarn and polyurethane-coated copper fibers that have been woven together by a computerized knitting machine. Microchips and other components can be incorporated into the material, and the fabric can be washed and dried multiple times without losing functionality.
The fabric will also maintain its integrity even when hit with a bullet, which could allow it to be integrated into a soldier's Kevlar vests, but the team believes it is the material's 'washability' that will make it most attractive to the consumer market.
