A new take on the modular smartwatch concept, the NEX Band can accommodate different electronic components much like a charm bracelet—and is being aimed at teenagers.
Offered by the startup Mighty Cast, the NEX Band's wristband is equipped with a microcontroller, vibrating motor, low-energy Bluetooth radio and a battery with a lifespan between two to four days. The band will be sold with a basic module that alerts the user to texts, calls or social media updates, but new modules can added at will. The new modules, priced from $7 to $10, can vary in functionality, from activity tracking and gesture recognition to a new character for use in mobile games.
The developers hope that the lower price as well as the ability to send 'secret messages' to other NEX Band owners will entice teens and tweens to purchase the device.
