The student-designed UCR NOx-Out device attaches to a gas mower to reduce emissions by as much as 90 percent.
According the EPA, a single gas mower operated for an hour will produce as much pollution as 11 cars being driven for the same amount of time. To help make mowing lawns a bit easier on the environment, a team of students from the University of Riverside, California developed the UCR NOx-Out, a stainless steel, L-shaped pipe meant to replace the mower's muffler.
The device works via a three-step process. First, a filter removes most of the solid pollutants. Then, a fine spray of urea is released into the exhaust system, readying the dirty air for the last stage. Finally, a catalyst converter converts the nitrogen oxide and ammonia into harmless nitrogen gas and water to be released into the air.
