The Nyrius Smart Outlet plugs into existing outlets to allow the user to turn on or off the device remotely—letting older electronics join in the joys of the smart home. In contrast to other devices that require a WiFi connect to operate, the Nyrius uses Bluetooth technology, which provides a range of about 33 feet. While this is a limitation in some aspects, it also allows the device to function in areas with no WiFi access, or while traveling.

The Nyrius is also equipped with a proximity sensor, which will switch on a device when the paired smartphone nears it, and the ability to program custom schedules to prompt devices to activate automatically.
