Obalon Gastric Balloon is Swallowed in a Capsule

Obalon Gastric Balloon is Swallowed in a Capsule
Jan-31-14
Developed as an alternative to gastric surgery, the Obalon can be swallowed in a capsule and then travel to the stomach, where it is inflated to discourage over-eating by creating the sensation of fullness.

Recently launched in the UK, the Obalon was created for patients with a BMI of at least 60 lb per square foot. A catheter is attached to the balloon at one end with the other end remaining outside the body, which allows the balloon to be inflated as it sits at the top of the stomach. The catheter tube is then removed, and the balloon can stay in place for 12 weeks. The entire process takes no more than 15 minutes, and the balloon can be removed during an outpatient procedure.
