The world's complete computing system, designed to be used by glaucoma patients to monitor eye pressure, represents another step toward smaller and more efficient computers.
Designed by researchers from the University of Michigan, the computer includes a microprocessor, pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell and wireless radio with an antenna that can transmit data to an external reader device, all contained within its one cubic millimeter shell. The computer utilizes the Phoenix chip, which uses a sleep mode to save power by waking itself every 15 minutes to take readings. A new sort of antenna is able to act as its own reference, eliminating the need for a crystal and helping to keep the size of the system at a minimum.
