Optical Blood Pressure Cuff Offers Better Readings

Optical Blood Pressure Cuff Offers Better Readings
Aug-15-17
A new optic-based automatic blood pressure cuff could offer professional level accuracy at home.

While home-use blood pressure cuffs are a useful way to track health, the commonly used oscillometric automatic blood pressure cuffs are not very accurate at measuring systolic blood pressure.

To overcome this limitation, the new blood pressure device relies on photoplethysmography, an optical method of measuring changes in blood volume inside tissue. Small clips are placed on the patient’s fingers along with an upper arm inflatable cuff, allowing the clips to ‘watch’ as the blood volume in the fingers changes, indicating systolic blood pressure.
