Origami-Inspired Off-World Habitats

Origami-Inspired Off-World Habitats
Sep-25-18
The self-assembling, origami-based habitats being designed by the MoonMars team could house off-world pioneers.

Though we have our eyes toward long-term visits to Mars and the Moon, the low gravity and other challenges of space travel make standard construction practices difficult to impossible to follow.

To better suit the off-world environments, the collaborative MoonMars team developed habitats based on origami principles. The habitats could pack flat for transport, and then be expanded on site by robots, inflation or embedded actuators. The angled surface of the habitats could also deflect micrometeorites as well as offer a mounting point for solar panels.
