A tendril-like soft robot inspired by the osmosis of plants is powered by an internal liquid-based system.
The robot was created by a team from the Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia using a slender, flexible PET tube filled with a liquid containing electrically charged particles. Flexible electrodes at the bottom of the narrow tube will attract the particles when a current is applied, which creates movement in the water that in turn triggers the ‘tendril’ to curl. Turning off the power source will reverse the motion.
According to the team, the lower required voltages of the innovative technology could have applications in safe and appealing wearable devices.
