The strip-proof Outlaw Screw eschews conventional screws and screwdrivers in favor of a three-tiered design that provides more contact, holding the screws more tightly and reducing the chance of slippage.
Designed by Outlaw, and recently funded on Kickstarter, the deck screws feature three tiers of hexagonal recesses in their heads, which provide 18 contact points with the Outlaw bit. The bit able to hold the screws more firmly, which means less dropped screws and less screw-wobble, and the screws’ self-drilling tips eliminate the need to pre-drill holes.
The team chose to introduce their first Outlaw screws as deck screws because attaching a deck with screws requires the builder to drill down most of the time. The down-drilling position is particularly susceptible to screws dropping off the bit, and the high torque required when drilling a deck screw increases the possibility of stripping the screw head.
