Packet-Laden Eye Drops Stick Around Longer

Packet-Laden Eye Drops Stick Around Longer
Sep-04-16
A new type of eye drops delivers the medication in packets that resist being washed away by the body’s own defenses.

While eye drops are used to treat a variety of eye problems, up to 95 percent of the medication can be flushed away by the body’s natural response. To help increase the effectiveness of medicated eye drops, a team from McMaster University had developed a way to suspend “molecular packets” of the medicine in the eye drop’s carrier liquid. Once administered to the eye, the molecular medicine packets will attach to the mucous layer of the eye and remain on the cornea for several days, slowing dissolving to release the medication.

Besides reducing the amount of medicine that is wasted in conventional eye drops, the new technology could also mean that the drops need to be applied less often.
