Paper and Tape Generator Relies on Static Electricity

Paper and Tape Generator Relies on Static Electricity
Feb-01-16
Researchers have created a simple generator made from office supplies that draws on static electricity to create power.

Developed by the team at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), the device consists of Telfon tape, cardstock paper and pencil lead. Two sheets of the paper were coated with a layer of graphite carbon found in pencil lead, and then separated by an arched piece of Teflon tape. Applying pressure to the device will cause the two sheet to make contact, resulting in a negative charge on the tape and positive charge on the paper. The cards can then be separated to build up a charge on the carbon layers as strong as that from two AAA batteries.
